Original Artwork or a Print? A Buyer's Guide

Original Artwork or a Print? A Buyer's Guide

One of the questions I hear most often -at shows, in emails, in the comments, is some version of: "Should I get the original or a print?" It's a genuinely good question, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you're looking for. Here's what I wish more buyers knew before they decided.

Uniqueness

An original is one of a kind. Once it leaves the studio, there is no other. The exact marks I made on that particular day, with that particular light coming through the window - that's yours, and only yours. It's an object with a history.

A quality print reproduces the image faithfully, but it is one of a limited or open edition. That doesn't make it lesser - it makes it accessible. Prints let more people live with work they love, and that matters to me.

Texture and Scale

This is where originals can surprise people in person. Paintings have physical presence. You can see the raised brushstrokes, the places where I built up paint, the edges of the canvas. Photographs don't capture that. If you've ever stood close to a painting and noticed the texture catching the light, you already know what I mean.

Prints are smooth and flat by nature. Giclée prints on fine art paper or canvas can be beautiful, but the surface is different. They're also available in a range of sizes, which sometimes makes it easier to fit a specific wall.

Price

Originals reflect the full time, materials, and creative labor that went into making them - they are priced accordingly. Prints make it possible to bring original artwork into your home at a more accessible price point. Both are worthwhile; they just serve different budgets and different intentions.

Display Choices

Originals are typically framed or hung unframed (gallery-wrapped canvases look great either way). They tend to become a focal point in a room because of their presence and scale.

Prints give you more flexibility. They frame easily, fit standard frame sizes, and work well in gallery walls or smaller spaces. They're also a practical choice if you move often or like to rotate what's on your walls.

How to Choose

Ask yourself a few honest questions:

  • Do you want something truly one-of-a-kind? Original.
  • Do you have a specific size or budget in mind? Start with prints.
  • Are you drawn to texture and the physical mark of the hand? See the original if you can.
  • Do you want to fill a specific wall or space? Prints offer more sizing flexibility.
  • Do you just want to love what's on your wall every day? Either one will do that.

There's no wrong answer. I make both because I believe both have a place in a home.
